This is the first Backyard Contest. To make it more interesting, in this contest you will only be allowed to use one-button in the game you create, either from the mouse or the keyboard. I am not offering any prizes for the winners, mainly because I do not have the resources to do so, but I hope you will participate anyway. Your entry will be featured on this page when the contest is complete. Instructions on how to enter and the rules are below.
- How do I enter?
- Send an email to levj220@backyardproductions.org with the subject "One-Button Contest Signup" stating that you would like to enter the contest, including your name and email address. Then start working. : )
- When you are finished, send your entry to levj220@backyardproductions.org along with your name, and website(if you want a link to it put on the page).
- All entries MUST be sent to me no later than midnight March 18
- Rules:
- Each entry must take input from only ONE button(besides of course the ESC button for exiting the game). The button can be either on the mouse or the keyboard, but only one of the two can be used. Also, following the mouse's movements is not allowed UNLESS you forfeit your ability to take input from a button. For example, you COULD NOT have a game where the user follows a ball around and clicks on it to get a point, but you could have a game where, when the user mouses over something it explodes, or when you user presses a button something explodes(though what explodes cannot be governed by where the mouse is). This means that if you do use a button on the mouse, it would be just like using a button on the keyboard, there would be no advantage.
- The total size of the game files MUST be under 10MB
- I prefer you use OpenGL for the graphics, however, since this is really more of a contest in how fun you can make a game with only one button, if you would rather use another API do so, just tell me which one you used when you send in your entry.
- Prizes:
- As much as I would like to offer prizes to the creators of the best entries, currently I do not have the resources to be able to do so. However your game will be shown on this page, and if you like, a link to your website.
- Judging
- The judging will be done by me and most likely some other friends. I have decided that this contest will not be decided by votes of the public. I want it to be judged in a very peticular way. The main judging factors will be, in order of importance:
- 1. How fun the game is--How fun you can make the game using only one button.
- 2. Artwork/Graphics--How good the game looks, this is a much more minor factor. For example, if there is a perfectly polished game that's just plain boring, it will come in behind a game full of programmer's art that is very fun. For this reason, you are more than welcome to use your own art, especially if this means you have time to make the game more fun.
If you have a question about the contest, email me.
